Birth Control Question & Answer

Birth control, or contraception, is any way in which you prevent pregnancy. Some of the most common forms of contraception include:

  • Birth control pill
  • Condom
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Birth control implant (Nexplanon)
  • Vaginal ring
  • Birth control shot
  • Birth control patch
  • Vasectomy (male partner)
  • Sterilization (female)

Depending on a variety of factors, such as lifestyle and medical history, your provider may recommend hormonal birth control or nonhormonal birth control to prevent pregnancy.

Some of the most common birth control brands that Trade Winds Family Medicine recommends are: Mirena®, Kyleena®, Nexplanon®, NuvaRing®, Depo-Provera®, and male vasectomy.

Aside from abstinence, almost every form of birth control has the potential for unwanted side effects.  The good news is that many women do not experience any side effects.  Also,  if side effects do occur, they will often subside within the first month or two of use.  Possible side effects include:

  • Spotting or abnormal bleeding
  • Heavy periods
  • Very light, or loss of periods
  • Cramps
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Low libido
  • Weight gain or loss

Contact your provider if they persist for longer than three months. The team at Trade Winds Family Medicine may recommend another birth control option that’s better for you.

There are plenty of birth control benefits in addition to pregnancy prevention, including the treatment of:

  • Acne
  • Endometriosis
  • Cramps
  • Irregular menstruation

In teens and young women, hormonal birth control can help regulate chaotic hormones.

Hormonal birth control is a particularly good idea if you or your daughter suffer from extremely heavy periods.

Condoms.  Males can use condoms to lessen the risk of sexually transmitted infections as well as prevent pregnancy.

Vasectomy.  A vasectomy is a permanent male sterilization procedure.  Vasectomies are performed at Trade Winds Family Medicine in a clinic setting and are offered for established male patients at Trade Winds Family Medicine (must be our patient; not done as a consulting provider)..
