Primary Care Question & Answer

Your primary care practitioner, or PCP, is the first stop on your journey toward optimal health. The experts at Trade Winds Family Medicine take into consideration your personal health goals in order to develop a health care plan that may include lifestyle medicine, preventive care, and traditional medical therapy.

Any of our Trade Winds Family Medicine providers can be your primary care provider, offering such services as:

  • Annual physicals
  • Screenings for disease
  • Preventive care
  • Immunizations
  • Sick visits when you’re not feeling well (tele-medicine available)
  • Medications
  • Specialized men’s or women’s health care
  • Pediatric care
  • Referring you to a specialist when needed

Your primary care provider also coordinates with the other members of your health care team if you have a complex health problem. They perform all the recommended screenings and immunizations based on your age group and gender

At Trade Winds Family Medicine, our providers emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and preventive strategies in achieving and maintaining health. When you come for a consultation, the care team will talk to you about any health concerns you have and take a complete medical and family history.

An exam consists of measuring variables such as blood pressure, height and weight, and temperature. We will also ask you questions to screen your mood for signs of anxiety or depression. We will query habits that can affect your health, such as smoking. If a physical exam is desired or recommended, then the provider will listen to your heart and lungs, evaluate other bodily systems, and make sure to address any areas for which you are having symptoms or concerns.

Your practitioner orders blood tests and urine tests, if needed, to make sure your internal organs are functioning well and that you’re free of infections or other markers of disease.

If you experience a health emergency, you should go straight to the emergency room. If you or your child is ill or is experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, you can schedule an appointment at Trade Winds Family Medicine for a complete evaluation and diagnosis. If you’re ill, your primary care provider may prescribe medications or lifestyle adjustments so that you feel well again.  Telemedicine is available for sick visit care.

Trade Winds Family Medicine always recommends lifestyle interventions which are the least invasive, most natural and supportive therapies possible. However, sometimes traditional medicine is also necessary to optimize health. If medication is recommended, it is to support lifestyle measures, not to replace them. We will make your values a priority, and partner with you to find a treatment plan that you are comfortable with.
